When I saw plans for the new space, I was a bit concerned and skeptical that such an “open” library would work for middle school children. I was afraid with the comfy chairs and large spaces the children would be more distracted than focused. I am so glad that I was wrong. I brought my sixth grade science classes into the “Cube” for a week recently while they were researching planets. The students were divided into groups with three or four students in each group. The new space has a quiet area, small “office” type areas and traditional table and chair areas. My students were using all of the different kind of spaces. Even the groups that were sitting in the chairs that spin were focused on their research. It was a lovely experience for the children--and the teacher!!
